    Memories of McMillan and Wife...

McMillan and Wife was my favorite show when I was a pre-teen. I would rush my parents home for church on Sunday nights when it was on. Now, I am taping and watching the reruns on the Hallmark channel. I will probably order the ones that I miss taping. I don't remember the last season with Susan St. James though. I wish that they could have done something different than having her character die. But that's life! I enjoy the on-screen chemistry that Rock and Susan had even after finding out about his homosexuality. I still think that he was a great actor and I love to watch his movies with Doris Day also.

Some of the shows were truly great, the Circus episode where there was a song that played through out. And then there were other episodes which looked like they ran out of production money or the writers were on strike. Nancy Walker and John Schuck were great supporting actors and at times, were under utilized. It is a shame that Susan St. James was dropped at the end. It is clear America gave a clear message that this was the wrong decision because the show went belly up and most people forgot what the last shows looked like.

McMillan & Wife was my favorite show when I was in high school. I loved the Sally McMillan character and the chemistry between her and Mac. I have almost all of the episodes on tape. I really am only interested in the shows with Susan Saint James in them. I still enjoy popping in a tape and watching McMillan & Wife. The show still hold up!

Police Comissioner Stuart McMillan (played by Rock Hudson), and his hip, beautiful wife Sally (played by Susan Saint James), solve crimes in San Francisco. This show was definitely a take off on The Thin Man Series of the 30's and 40's, which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy. Very good detective show, featured on the Sunday Mystery Movie series of the Super70s. Still plays well today!

Re: Memories of McMillan and Wife...

In a year when several stars of the big screen failed in their attempt to headline a TV series (Shirley Maclaine, Anthony Quinn, and James Stewart among them), Rock Hudson succeeded in this segment of the original NBC Mystery Movie. Hudson starred as San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart McMillan whose wife Sally, played by the delightful Susan Saint James somehow got involved in all of his cases. Reminiscent of "The Thin Man" movies, the series was pure escapism mixing humor and mystery, frequenly with an occult theme. The final, sixth season found the show retitled "McMillan" after Saint James left in a salary dispute.

Rock Hudson as ladies man in those dreadful Doris Day movies? Rock Hudson as loving husband on "McMillian and Wife?" Now, that's acting.

Re: Memories of McMillan and Wife...

This show was often called the Super70s "Thin Man". Stuart and Sally McMillan were an updated Nick and Nora Charles who often went to lavish get-togethers and went on trips only to have a murder take place.

This show also had a great supporting cast with John Schuck(Sgt. Enright) and Nancy Walker(Mildred the Housekeeper).

The show openings showed us a travelog of San Francisco and The McMillan's home life. and great guest stars which include Buddy Hackett, Jack Cassidy, Larry Hagman, Wally Cox and various others.
