    Named after Nakia!

True Story: I never saw the show but my Mom did. Apparently, the final episode (The Fire Dancer; Dec 28 1974) made a HUGE impression on her. So here I sit, Nakia (DOB: Dec 29 1974), searching the web for any and all info about the show I was named after…

    Re: Named after Nakia!

How interesting! I was also browsing the website about the show in '74 that I was named after! My mom was impressed with Robert Forester, and decided that if I was a boy I would be Nakia Caleb, and if I was a girl, I would be Nakia Nyree. I was born May 19, 1975, after the show was cancelled and named Nakia Nyree. I think it is very odd that I have basically the same story as the one I just read!

Hello, My name is also Nakia. I was born on Feb 27, 1975 and I was named after the Nakia. My mom used to tell that I should be the only person with that named because the show wasn't very popular. But I guess it was, thats for all the help I've been looking for this site for awhile. Thankz Nakia C.

    Re: Named after Nakia!

My parents were stationed in the Philippines at the time I was born. She told me about a show called "Nakia" that aired in the Super70s. My dad loved the name and when I was born May 24, 1975 the name that I was given "Nekkia", my dad wanted to change the spelling but it's pronounced the same, but it was because of the show. . . funny that others were also named because of that thought I was the only one. It's strange I have run into quite a few others with the name different spelling and even both genders. I am female and lived across from a boy with the name and upstairs from a little girl with the name - very weird! The only problem that I have encountered with the way that my name is spelled is that people always seem to mispronounce it! :-)

    Re: Named after Nakia!

I was searching the web as well, looking to capture a glimps of this TV show my mother had taken a liking to when she was pregnant. It must have been an impressionable show for I too was given the name. On March 17 1975 my mother Susan Disbennett gave birth to baby boy who she named Nakia K. Disbennett. The name is definitly one to ponder, it raises the eyebrow of all that hear it, and causes those who speak it to remember. It has proven to be the best gift my mother could have ever given me. As it seems, I am not the only one who benifits from this powerful name. A name with no true origin or meaning is truley a gift. so for all of you that share this label of enigma do as I did. Define it with your character. Be proud of what you make of it.

--Nakia K. Disbennett -aka- Nakia M. X. Petersen

    Re: Named after Nakia!

This is so wild. My name is also Nakia and I was named after this same show. My birthday is May 24, 1975. I notice that all of the other "Nakia's" was born around the same time, one of them was born the exact same day as me. My mom was a fan of the show, and here I am. . . Nakia. I googled my name and was intrigued the minute that I saw this site that featured that show. I am absolutely amazed by this!

    Re: Named after Nakia!

I actually named my oldest daughter Nakia. She is a beautiful adult now with two very beautiful daughters. One of my co-workers says she heard the name Nakia the other day and said that is the only other time she has heard that name.

    Re: Named after Nakia!

Well imagine my surprise when on a whim I also decided to look up the show I was named after and it turns out i'm not the only one!!!!! (Although my mom changed the spelling from Nakia to Nakea because the first two letters of her name are na and the first two of my dad's are ke.) I have never seen the show nor meet anyone who had heard of the show but boy am I shocked to see the number of people named after this show. Suddenly I don't feel so weird being named after a show no one has ever heard of I thought but my mom!!! by the way my DOB is 10-3-1974.

    Re: Named after Nakia!

I remember watching Nakia many years ago. I always loved the name and did some research on it to find out it's meaning and background. I was especially touched when I read what some of your readers had written - that their parents graced them with the name Nakia - that they thought it was unique and special. I want you to know that

it is even more special than you could ever imagine. . . It's from the Navajo Nation and it's translation means "Strong Brave One. "

I just lost my beloved dog "Nakia" from a long illness. I gave him that name when I found him because of all he had been through. He had some very hard times in his life, but overcame them because of all the love he was surrounded with. He truly lived up to his name. May he rest in peace with the Great Spirit. And may all of you, who are so blessed to have such a beautiful name, find that strength also. . .

    Re: Named after Nakia!

This is such a cool day for me because I have been telling the story of how my dad named me after this short lived tv show in the Super70s. And it's weird to see how a lot of you were also born in May like me! (May 17th 1975). I was a senior in high school and was skimming through the tv guide and saw my name spelled exactly how I spell it. This was key because the few Nakia's I had met all spelled their name differently. Then I read the synopsis and saw the year it came out and something hit me. You see my dad is a hugh movie and history buff and it dawned on me that he would totally name me after a tv show or character. So I confronted him and at first he denied it but soon gave in. I was a little disappointed at first because I thought that he went on this great quest to find a name for his first born but then I realized what a great story this would be to tell at parties! So here I am on a Sunday evening kinda bored and plugging my name into different search engines and came across this wonderful web site. I will continue to check to read other's stories and funny tales.

    Re: Named after Nakia!

Oh my...! Today for some strange reason I decided to look up what my name meant and came across this site. My cousin named me and he said it was after a T. V. show in the Super70s but I thought "He Had To Be Kidding" My mom had no idea she just liked the name. Well I moved from 1 state to another and there were several people with the name Nakia but my name was the only one spelled exact. This is really flooring before we moved I was the only Nakia. Now come to find out there may be thousands due to this popular show from the Super70s.

[Editor's note: If this show had been any more popular, we'd now be a nation of Nakias!

    Re: Named after Nakia!

I sit here myself and also feel as the other Nakia's before me. I am Nakia also and my DOB is 2-12-75. Must have been some show for all of our mothers and fathers to want to name us after it.
