Memories of the Julie Andrews Hour

It is a long, long time since this series was screened (in Australia it was 1975, from memory) but I remember portions of the first episode in which Julie danced and sang with two other versions of herself as Eliza Doolittle and some other character (I still don't know how they did this, I assume they used doubles - or triples! - for Julie but it was extremely well done if they did). At the end of the show Julie admitted she was "exhausted". I also remember vividly the episode in which Julie's guest was the real Maria von Trapp, and in the course of the interview the opening sequence from "The Sound of Music" was screened on TV for the first time. A wholesome and entertaining show which I believe was screened on cable TV in Australia a few years ago but I'm not aware of any recent screenings.

Re: Memories of the Julie Andrews Hour

The Julie Andrews Hour was and still is my all-time favorite television show. I remember, as a child, being permitted to stay up late on a school night to watch when it was first broadcast at 10pm on Wednesday nights. It seemed as if everyone on our street watched that show and we were so suprised that it suffered from low Nielsen ratings.

All I've seen of this show are clips. Most are very poor quality but you can tell just from those bits of video that this was an excellent show. All the regulars and the guests were top-quality entertainers and Julie herself is stupendously wonderful. Her awesome talent shines and her stellar voice just blows your mind everytime.

The show had to have been great to win so many Emmys in only one season. It should be hailed as a classic by all and most definitely made available on DVD as soon as possible so that fans of Julie Andrews (especially those who were like 2 years old when this thing aired!) can finally own what is indeed the finest in musical entertainment.

Re: Memories of the Julie Andrews Hour

What wonderful memories I have of The Julie Andrews Hour, Julie was/is breathtaking and not only beautiful but a very fuuny gal. Julie's younger fans should have the opportunity to enjoy The Julie Andrews Hour as we older fans did in the Super70s, and how wonderful it would be to see them again. It would fall into the category of: A dream come true.

Re: Memories of the Julie Andrews Hour

At its best, The Julie Andrews Hour provides one of the best ongoing songbooks of the musical theatre, sung wondefully by Julie and her various guests, with great Nelson Riddle arrangements. Often the show features elaborate choreogrpahy (that would not be out of place in a TV special rather than a weekly series). Julie's voice was mostly in goregous tone throughout. And there are also a few camp gems such as the episode featuring Angela Lansbury and Julie impersonating, among others, pairs of Ethel Mermans and Carmen Mirandas. Julie and guests also tackled then-contemporary music with varying success, but these sonjgs would also be fun to listen to now. Julie did this show years before before cabaret returned and Linda Ronstadt (with Nelson Riddle) popularized and took the squareness out of show tunes. Sadly, Julie's voice is no more and she never recorded for audio release much of the material on the JAH; but release of the JAH on DVD would go some ways to make up for this tragic loss.

Re: Memories of the Julie Andrews Hour

I think the Julie Andrews Hour is great. I have only seen clips because I wasnt born when this show was aired. Julie is my favorite actress of all times and I think all her fans including those in future should be able to enjoy her any time they wish. I think it would be a very good idea to release a DVD of this show so fans like me can watch her whenever we wish. Julie is the best.
