    A favorite!

The premise of "Bridget Loves Bernie" is that 'Bridget' (and her family) is catholic and 'Bernie' (and his family) is Jewish. As one might expect, many humorous storylines, in this half-hour situation comedy, revolved around the interactions of the two families and their differences in faith. All the players hit their marks, as I recall, and this was a genuinely funny and very popular show, but was cancelled after one season due to the controversy created by the depicted 'inter-faith' marriage. It's amazing what was considered controversial back then! As an aside Meredith Baxter and David Birney (who played the title characters) actually went on to marry in real-life (though they ultimately divorced). In fact Meredith Baxter hypenated her last name 'Baxter-Birney' for many years after (Just look up old credits for the show "Family").

Re: A favorite! - Not mine!

A truly barfy, predictable and low-class program. Both principals in the cast were about as compelling as waiting for a bus. A shopworn re-telling of that ancient pukey chestnut, "Abie's Irish Rose, " perpetuating the same old stereotypes, yet having the gall of presenting itself as something new and enlightened in the well-meaning but self-deluding early Super70s.

I absolutely adored this show. I wish we could find it on DVD or even video. It was a great family show and it was sad it only lasted a year.
