    Memories of Shields and Yarnell

It was one-of-a-kind entertainment! Hope they make a comeback, or the networks run their show again!
I loved them when I was a kid. In fact, I used to PRACTICE in the mirror. I, too, wanted to be a mannequin!

I loved to watch Shields and Yarnell as a teenager!! I don't remember an entire show, but they're characters such as the Clinkers - robot like couple bumbling and knocking things over was so funny. It was great to see them do street mime - so very exciting, I think it was the first time we got to see improvisation at its best.

I discovered that I had a knack for silent performing while in college. . and watched these guys with great interest! I ultimately studied and became a professional mime/clown entertainer from 1979 - 1988 - a great time for me! I got to travel the country, be on TV and perform with a very talented touring mime troupe.

I'll always have fond memories of these two and appreciate the influence they had on my life - as I certainly experienced one of those roads less traveled!

The now scarcely remembered variety show of the 70, "Shields and Yarnell" was easily my favorite TV show as a kid. That duo had more talent than the rest of TV land combined. Most memorable was their act, the Clinkers, a robot couple and their mechanical antics. It was eye-popping physical comedy that far transcended miming or clowning. I always wonder why this kind of performance magic winds up so obscure and little-known.

My friend Leslie and I would play "Shields and Yarnell" (instead of cops and robbers) where we would try to imitate the actions of these amazing mimes. I watched that show religiously. Years later, as an adult, I ran into Robert Shields at his studio in Sedona, AZ. I was dumstruck, and blurted out, "I used to be you!" He got quite the kick out of it. Plus it didn't hurt that he was and still is cuter than cute! I sure wish I could see that show again!-Kate (Milwaukee, WI)
