Memories of Are You Being Served?

Me and my son used to watch that show. He loved it alot, and we both laughed alot over the humor. I'm glad my son was able to enrich his life with good, clean humor.

In my family, AYBS was a 3-generation event. My dad, my son, and I watched it together. I think Dad's favorite character was Mrs. Slocombe. My son's favorite was Mr. Humphries. For me, it was a tie between Mr. Humphries, Mrs. Slocombe, and Miss Brahms. My dad is now gone, and the local PBS station doesn't air AYBS anymore that I know of. My son and I both miss it almost as much we miss my dad. What great times we had together. Are You Being Served was a huge part of that.

This show had some of the most unlikely plot lines ever put on TV. But, you always knew the actors were always in on the joke and knew it was farce and not Shakespeare, so it works very well. My favorite episode is any of them where the staff has to stay late for some meeting and Mrs. Slocombe has to worry about her "poor, little ***". (Mr. Akbar, her neighbor, was always ready to give her a hand with it when she called on him though, wasn't he?)

I started watching this show at a time before we had access to cable TV and it got to be a real fascination of mine. At a time when nothing else I liked was on, I watched "Are you being served?" reruns on PBS and loved it! I especially Mrs. Slocum, the older woman whose hair was alternately pink, blue, green, or gray. I would still watch it if I could find it on my DSS.

It is THE BEST 'Britcom' on TV! I love it! I have autographed photos from all of the survinng main cast members except Trvor Bannister! They're so great, and John Inman plays TV's 1st openly gay character--this even pre-dates Jody (Billy Crystal) on 'Soap'. This show is consistently hilarious! Like every sitcom, it has it's mediocre episodes, but they had much more good than bad ones here! It's super fabulous!

I was not around when AYBS first started coming on, but it has been coming on PBS for several years now. It is what brings my family together on the weekends. We too often spend too much time at school or work, but on the weekend, we are all together to hear Mr. Humphreys say, "I'm free!" or to see what color Mrs. Slocombe's hair is. Sharing these laughs together makes AYBS one of the best shows to come on our set.
