I think that the chemistry between Pete Duel and Ben Murphy was very special Alias Smith and Jones has been my favorite show since I was 5 years old. My favorite episode was "The McCreedy Bust, Going Going Gone." Burl Ives and Ceasar Romero guest starred.

Yes, Alias Smith & Jones basically copy-catted the classic film, "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid." However, it was a charming series with a sense of humor, and proved how entertaining the buddy-show formula was for the general public. Without this show, and others like it, there might never have been Awesome80s buddy-shows on TV like Cagney & Lacey, etc. This show was also one of the very last of the westerns on network TV, and didn"t take itself too seriously, unlike the heavy moralizing of previous TV westerns. With the attractive team of Pete Duel and Ben Murphy as the main characters, this was one of the few westerns on TV in the seventies that could appeal to a female audience.

My favorite episode was Stagecoach 7. Hayes and Curry join 2 couples and a baby when another passenger tries to ride roughshod over them and make 1 passenger ride on top. Kid Curry drew his gun with lightening speed to convince the man to ride on top himself. Then the stage is robbed and the leader of the outlaws(L.Q. Jones) almost recognizes our favorite outlaws. Later he and his gang follow the stage to the relay station where they encounter Keenan Wynn as station master. A gun battle ensues, in which Curry and Hayes are tied to chairs, but they are finally released and join in the gunfight along with the two other passengers(the mean passenger was struck by a stray bullet and killed). After the battle the kindly station manager gives back the money taken in the robbery and the driver lets Hayes and and Curry off so they can buy horses from a rancher. It was a funny series, but always had serious aspects.

This show was definately my favorite of the Super70s! I was eight years old at the time and I've always loved westerns. Pete and Ben were a great match. It was funny yet it was serious at times. My favorite episode was "The Bounty Hunter" with Louis Gosset Jr. When the show was on again about twelve years ago I taped several of them and that was one. I loved Pete Duel, he was the man in most of my dreams. I remember reading the article of his death, my mom showed it to me telling me she was sorry but Pete was dead. I couldn't stop thinking about him, I cried for days. But at least we still have the memories & great websites like this one, thanks.
