    Memories of "The New People"

I have no idea why I remember this program, but it has stuck in my mind for 33+ years. I remember the car race episode, and the episode where the guys built a water pipeline so the girls could have a shower. The other impression is how hotheaded the males were, they were always arguing & fighting amongst themselves. At least these are the memories of a (then) 12 year old.

What I remember most about the show was its discussion of issues. The show always centered around an issue such as Black/White relations, working class versus rich, the environment, and of course nuclear destruction. To me (a pre teenager just opening up to the larger world around him at the time) the show seemed cutting edge.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

This was one of those shows, if ever brought up in a group conversation, no one but me would remember. I had a strange fascination for the premise as a 12 year old. Escape all adults, school, suburbia, etc.

I remember glimpse of the show... hot rods made from the left over cars, a demented girl trying to call home from a broken phone booth. Lots of obtuse, angled shots, all very Super70s.

Locally in Cleveland, it was up against The Monkees and then Laugh-In as I remember. Add to that the odd conjoining of it with "David Steinberg's, The Music Scene" and it's no wonder it's now forgotten. This really would be a hoot to see again. Gosh I hope they made it off the Island, even if their careers didn't.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I thought I was the only one who remembered this series. What I remember most was the cars they put together from old army equipment left on the island (I believe). Almost like dune buggies but better.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I was 11 years old and very impressed by this show - I have remembered it all my life. We even used to 'play' "The New People", my sister and I would pick a character and 'be' that person as on the show. (We lived out in the country and pretended a lot hehe). Have not seen an episode since, just a still of Zooey Hall, in a paperback I found. Today, I came online to look for some info about the show. This was most helpful, I even almost remember an episode! Thanks for being here.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I was beginning to think I was crazy and made this whole thing up as no one I have ever asked remembered the show. I was fascinated by their struggle to survive and use what they had. I can still picture the characters standing on the beach with the plane behind them, I think it had the American flag painted boldly on it. How fitting that Rod Serling was involved. Even more bizarre to me that I remember this show, now that I realize I was 7 years old when this series so briefly aired. I am very grateful this site is so thorough.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

Oh my gosh. I've been thinking about this show for years. I was 9 years old when it came out. No one knew what I was talking about when I would try and decribe this show. I loved the show and remember being sad that it last. How do I obtain a video? I want to share this with my 20 year old son and 23 year old daughter. Cheers to the The New People!

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I was nine years old and I remember this series. I just thought of it the other day when there was a commerical for a new TV series called Lost - it seems a little like The New People.

I remember them running the draft numbers across the bottom of the screen during the show. My Brother and future Brother-In-Law were both of draft age.

The show should have lasted longer than it did.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

Isn't it weird that it seems like most of the posters here were around 12 years old at the time and this show stuck in their minds for some reason, just as it stuck in mine all these years? I identified with the girl with the short dark hair, I can't remember her real name or her charachters name and sometimes I wondered if she continued acting but I don't recall seeing her in anything else after the show. Like Tom, I thought I was the only one who remembered it and had stopped even asking people if they remembered it. Just a few minutes ago I saw an ad on TV for a new show coming soon. It is about a group of young people whose plane crashes on an island! It looked SO MUCH like The New People that my memory came back and I came in here to research it and found this site. It will be interesting to see what this new show is all about…

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I was just a kid when this came out but I distinctly recall that I felt my attention instantly riveted to the TV when an agonizing string of commercials would finally end and the theme song would start up. These days I don't remember all of the lyrics but I remember all the breaks and nuances. I think the song was great representation of a very expressive and experimental sub-cultural era in television. It deserves more attention than it receives in nostalgia.

Bad actors, cheezey plots and goofy wardrobes. I really loved that show.

I just remember that I hated Tiffany Bolling. I think I had a crush on Dennis Oliviera? and I think they were an "item" on the show.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

I'm so glad to finally find the cult of people who remember The New People! I've spent YEARS asking friends my age if they remember it and just get strange looks. Now that LOST is entering the televison scene, I expect some trivia-obsessed television critic to remember the show that predated it. I loved the dramatic, hippie vibe--so shocking for a pre-teen girl--I think I even remember an episode involving marijuana, although that could be my imagination.

Re: Memories of "The New People"

This is so cool! I've been trying to find out information about this show for some time. I'd bring it up to others and they'd look at me like I was crazy. I liked the show and was disappointed when it ended quickly. As a 13-year-old, I liked the issues it covered and found it very appealing. Man, I'm just so relieved to find that it actually existed and that others remember it!
