The guest I most remember on this variety show was Andy
Kaufman. He appeared several times, once as a painfully shy performer who hid in
box on stage after getting stage fright and being asked to leave by Dick Van
***. (Dick had to talk him out of the box.) Another time, in that mousey,
almost Latka Gravis-like voice, he came on to do impressions. The first few were
really lame, then he said he'd do Elvis Presley, "thank-you-very-much". He
turned to face the back of the stage, pulled out a comb and went at his hair,
then turned back to do a simply fabulous Elvis impression! He was the best guest
and the highlight of the show. I think it may have launched his career as this
was pre-Taxi and that shy, quiet voiced character became Latka.
