"Chic was never disco - they were sophisticated FUNK! It may have been uptempo funk, but it was funk nevertheless. Bernard's basslines and his rubbery style of play combined with Niles sizzling guitar riffs and Tony Thompson's tight drumming certainly qualifies it as funk. Then they added the sophistication with the vocal arrangements, string arrangements, and in some cases lyrical references. I can even point out how they would stack harmonies on chants in songs (listen to "Chic Cheer" from the "C'est Chic" album). With this album, Nile and Bernard (RIP) had reached a peak. (<--notice the Sister Sledge reference. :-) They maintained this peak through the Diana Ross album, but as always, good things must come to an end (although I did like Niles' two solo albums.)" --Anonymous |
