Greatest Hits

Elton John - Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002

By Bill Holdship

This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike.

Your Memories Shared!

"Elton John & Bernie Taupin are probably the most prolific singer & song writer team of the past 50 years. Bernie's lyrics hit an emotional chord with practically everyone that hears them. Elton John is an expert song writer/piano player & and has a depth of vocal range that make you sing along with most of his songs. Ranging from rockers such as "The Bitch Is Back", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", & "Bennie & The Jets", to ballads that have a "hymnal quality" like "Levon" , "Candle In The Wind", or "Skyline Pigeon" to the bluesy "Amoreena". In 1970, (my sophomore year of high school) Elton came along with the best live performances you could imagine. He wore the wildest outfits, and sang ballads that would melt your heart. I'm fortunate to have seen him live at that time right up to the present day, and he never dissapoints. Let me tell you that if you have never seen Elton in concert do so (for your own gratification) the next time that he performs in your area. Trust me, you will walk away an instant fan, and will want want to hear more of the 30 plus years of Elton & Bernie Taupin's extensive catalog of songs. The rest is up to you. Check out the CD's as well as the videos. YOU WILL BECOME A FAN!"

"In 1973,when I was 11 years old I fell in love with Elton John. I heard Crocodile Rock on the radio and was hooked! From that point on I was a huge fan. I recently saw his new video for "This Train Don't Stop", with Justin Timberlake, and almost cried! He looked so much like the Elton I fell in love with and remember. My walls were plastered with his posters...Elton John and Bernie Taupin's music really influenced me and was a great comfort to me during those awkward adolescent years."

"Elton John is a classically trained musician with "black American soul, rhythm and syncopation." Elton was clearly influenced by piano geniuses such as Fats Waller. Elton's "Bluesology" band played accompaniment for black American singers that toured London in the late 1960s. Elton and Bernie Taupin have frequently made references to "blues" in their songs. Elton represented a significant piece of the "British Invasion" culture, which was British artists singing American blues and R&B; music in their styles."

"Elton John has no doubt left his mark not only in the Super70s but for the past 30 years. Elton John not only has a remarkable music career but also a remarkable personal life. He has transformed negative incidents in his life into postive accomplishments. Every single song that he has come out with from the very beginning of his career has left a impression on every Elton John fan. My personal favorites from Elton's Super70s period is Daniel (1972), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), and Your Song (1970). Every Elton fan must listen to his new album--Songs from the West Coast. Every piece of music in this album is outstanding. That is no surprise to any of us. We would not expect anything else from an 1st class performer such as Elton John."

"I am a female, 69 years of age and I don't remember much of anything about Elton John in the Super70s and the songs listed for him I am not familiar with. But for the last couple of years I have really loved his music and his appearance on TV specials."

"Elton John is, in my opinion, one of the greatest musicians of all time. Viva Elton John's music-making talent. I hope that in a hundred years from now, his songs will be not forgotten by people."

"I discovered Elton John's music in early 1974. I 1st heard it on my mothers nightstand radio,"B-B-B-Bennie and The Jets!" I had no clue then what he was saying. A few more songs and years later I bought Greatest Hits, then G.H. Pt. 2 and then part 3. I also have many of his best LP's (on vinyl thank you.) I have Empty Sky, Elton John, "Friends" 1971 movie sountrack, Good-bye Yellow Brick Road, Honkey Chateau, Caribou and Rock Of The Westies. Oh! ..and 11/17/70 - a live LP. I have the Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits and he is the #1 act of the Super70s. He edged out Mr. McCartney by just a few points. As of 1999, he has 59 top 40 hits. I hope he at least gets one more! Go "Reg"!"

--Happi-Puppi

"I just saw Elton John and Billy Joel in concert on May 8, 2024 at the Allstate Arena out in Rosemont, Illinois. He was great as usual. I remember seeing Elton John back in 1976 for the first in his very outrageous suits. He was more subdue this time but just as great. I have been an Elton John Fan since he first began is career as a singer and song writer along with Bernie Taupin. Ride On Elton. I love you. Those Were The Days My Friend. I thought they would never end. But they did."
