Quincy, M.E.

By Leona Jean

Quincy (played by The Odd Couple's Jack Klugman) is an M.E. (medical examiner - hence 'Quincy M.E.') who gave up a lucrative private practice to go to work for the Los Angles County Coroner's Office. Why did he do this? A lifetime of experience in forensic medicine had lead him to realize that many so-called "natural deaths" were in fact murders. He decided to put this knowledge to better use - as a detective. This often annoyed the police department who thought he should stick to medicine and leave the crime solving to them.

Dr. Astin (played by John S. Ragin), Quincy's direct superior, was anything but happy with his amateur sleuthing. Quincy and his assistant Sam (played by one of the few 1970s Asian-America actors on television) went about solving the crimes unaffected by what the police or their superiors thought. Naturally, Quincy was the one who solved the cases though.

Quincy lived on a boat and spent a good deal of his time in a bar called Danny's Place. Lee, Quincy's first romantic interested, was played by Lynette Mettey but only lasted a season. Later he met a psychiatrist named Emily (played by Anita GIllete) who helped with some of his cases. Their characters were married before the series ended in 1983.

One of the best detective programs around. Up there with the greats such as Columbo and Ironside.
