Venera 7

By Marty McDowell

On Aug 17, 1970, the Soviet Union launched Venera 7, a 495-kilogram (1,091-pound) atmospheric probe. On December 15, 1970 it landed on the surface of Venus becoming the first probe ever landed on the surface of Venus.

Venera 7 transmitted data for 23 minutes before being either crushed by the intense atmospheric pressure or melted by the intense heat of Venus. During its short life, Venera 7 measured a surface temperature of 475C (887F), which is hot enough to melt lead. The probe also measured the surface pressure at 90 bar, which is equivalent to that found 1.5 miles beneath the ocean.
