The premise of "Bridget Loves Bernie" is that 'Bridget' (and her family) is catholic and 'Bernie' (and his family) is Jewish. As one might expect, many humorous storylines, in this half-hour situation comedy, revolved around the interactions of the two families and their differences in faith. All the players hit their marks, as I recall, and this was a genuinely funny and very popular show, but was cancelled after one season due to the controversy created by the depicted 'inter-faith' marriage. It's amazing what was considered controversial back then! As an aside Meredith Baxter and David Birney (who played the title characters) actually went on to marry in real-life (though they ultimately divorced). In fact Meredith Baxter hypenated her last name 'Baxter-Birney' for many years after (Just look up old credits for the show "Family"). --Paul B. | Note: This is just a random sample of the Bridget Loves Bernie messages in our TV forums!
