Hockey Cards of the Super70s

By Patrick Mondout

Welcome to our look at the hockey cards of the Super70s! We've got pages for all the O-Pee-Chee sets of the decade (and the Awesome80s too) as well as a complete checklists. Use the links on the left (under the green heading "Hockey Cards") to get started.

I have chosen to feature O-Pee-Chee cards in this section despite this being an American website. I do this for two reasons:

  1. Hockey is Canada's sport and O-Pee-Chee made the cards in Canada for Canadians.
  2. O-Pee-Chee took the task more seriously than did Topps and produced better sets in the years I am covering (through 1989).

The Topps and O-Pee-Chee cards are very similar but there are differences. O-Pee-Chee hockey cards are bilingual (French/English) and often feature different photography for the same player. They are also printed later than the Topps cards, and thus reflect some player movements within the league.

I hope that this decision does not prevent Topps hockey card collectors in the U.S. from enjoying a trip down memory lane in this section. And perhaps I will eventually include Topps cards if there proves to be enough interest.
