One Day at a TimeBy Persona Non Grata
The first sitcom featuring a divorcee, rather than a widow, raising
children. The series opened with newly divorced, after 17 years of
marriage, Ann Romano (Bonnie Franklin) and her two daughters, 17 year old
Julie Cooper (Mackenzie Philips) and 15 year old Barbara Cooper (Valerie
Bertinelli) moving into an apartment in Ann's hometown of Indianapolis.
The building super, Dwayne Schneider (Pat Harrington, Jr.), referred to
only as Schneider, considered himself quite a Lothario. Ann's love
interest early in the show was David Kane (Richard Masur), who was
considerably younger than Ann. Initially the show revolved on the trials
and tribulations of trying to raise two headstrong teenagers while trying
to keep a job.
Eventually Ann found a good job as an account executive for an
advertising agency. Both daughters were married during the series and Ann
remarried. Series star Mackenzie Philips had serious drug problems
and was written out of the show in the 1979 - 1980 season and again
in the 1981 - 1984 season.
