Emergency!

By Sheila Macias

"We're on our way, Rampart!"
The sound of the fire station alarm goes off and all of the kids head for the TV. Don't tell me you don't remember Emergency! This was the grooviest show going for its time man. I don't remember the blonde guy's name but I, as did many girls, remember Johnny. What a cutie!

My favorite episode was the one with the young guy, maybe 17 or 18, who called for help in severe pain. It was his birthday. His mother was going to make his favorite pumpkin bread or something like that. He got to it before she came home to bake it and ate the entire bowl of batter. It rose in his belly. It was swollen like he had swallowed a football . He moaned the whole time. I can't recall if they "punched it down" or pumped his stomach. I laughed my self sick. The sexy nurse would say, "Give him ringers lactate and transport him". They all got ringers. (Well maybe not the kid with his head stuck through the posts of the stairs.)

Where are they now?

Johnny, who was always saying things like "Man, that was a freaky accident!", is actor Randolph Mantooth. Randolph has since starred in the soap opera The City. Fireman Roy Desoto, the blonde, is actor Kevin Tighe. He has been in various TV shows and movies including Another 48 Hours. The fire engine used from 1973 until the final episode, a 1973 Ward LaFrance pumper, is now used in Yosemite National Park. Rampart Hospital is actually Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrence. Station 51 is actually Station 127 and is located at 2049 E. 223rd Street in Carson.

Your Memories Shared!

One of the all time great shows on TV-it encouraged many people to go into the medical field. It definitely helped to influence my life as a nurse. My favorite character is Chet Kelly, played by Timothy Donnelly.
